Matthew J. Braswell, MD, a fellowship-trained foot and ankle specialist, has joined the specialty team at EmergeOrtho-Coastal Region.
He is seeing patients at 1168 East Cutlar Crossing in Leland’s Villages at Brunswick Forest, 2716 Ashton Drive in Wilmington and 209 U.S. 117 North in Burgaw, according to a news release.
A graduate of Hoggard High School in Wilmington, Braswell earned a bachelor's degree in biology and medical degrees from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, where he was also a member of the varsity football team.
Following medical school, Braswell completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, the release stated.
"His commitment to excellence led him to pursue specialized training in foot and ankle orthopedics through a fellowship at the prestigious Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, New York," according to the release.
Throughout medical school, Braswell was a frequently published contributor to specialty medical journals and a podium presenter at national annual meetings for orthopedic specialists. He also served on various prestigious committees and programs covering a range of topics, including quality assurance and improvement, performing root cause analyses and instituting quality improvement measures, the release stated.
While in medical school, he worked with multiple military and veteran service organizations, including founding two. Proficient in Spanish as a second language, he has participated in medical service trips to Honduras twice and he spent a month in Tanzania in 2023, teaching residents and operating at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center, according to the release. He is also an active board member for a nonprofit focused on funding surgeries in developing countries.
With a love of athletics in general, and sports medicine in particular, Braswell has "relished the opportunities he had to work alongside team physicians for numerous NFL and NBA franchises," the release stated.
