Brunswick County has hired Edward Conrow as its director of emergency services, county officials announced recently. He started his new position April 1.

Conrow worked for more than 25 years in fire services, retiring as chief of the South Jersey Transportation Authority’s Airport Fire Department, a news release stated. He then went to work in the field of emergency management, most recently serving as the director of Emergency Services and Public Protection in Cumberland County, New Jersey, a county along the Delaware Bay coastline with a nearby nuclear plant.

Conrow has served also on the New Jersey Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 1 as a Rescue Squad Leader and a Hazardous Materials WMD Specialist.

"He deployed with that task force to provide search and rescue operations to the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001," the release stated. "He also deployed with the task force to respond to disasters and incidents in other areas, including hurricanes and floods."

Despite his New Jersey roots, Conrow had long wanted to move to the Southport area, according to the release.

“Mr. Conrow has a wealth of experience across many facets of emergency services and response, and I am excited that Brunswick County will get to benefit from that experience and knowledge,” Brunswick County Manager Ann Hardy said in the release. “I think he will make an excellent addition to our team.”
