In other district news, Virgo Preparatory Academy recently received a $6,500 donation from the North Carolina Holiday Flotilla organization. The money, according to the district's news release, will support Project Lead the Way and other aspects of the school's STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) curriculum.

This is the second year that Virgo has received a STEM donation from the flotilla organization through its Corporate Cup STEM Challenge and supporting companies such as CastleBranch Corp., McGladrey and PPD, the release stated.

Virgo's STEM program, led by teacher Shemeka Shufford, "introduces students to basic engineering concepts and computer programming through a series of fun and simple projects . . . the goal of the program is not to turn students into engineers but rather to foster a curiosity for discovering how things work," according to the release.
