Local Sports Hall Of Fame To Induct New Members, Honor Former Coach

The Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame will welcome four new inductees on May 3.

The four honorees – Chuck Carree, Mel Gibson, Jim Hebbe and James E. Moore Jr. – will join 40 other individuals the organization has inducted since its start in 2005, according to a news release from the organization. An induction ceremony and banquet will be held at the Burney Center on the University of North Carolina Wilmington campus.

Carree worked for 35 years as a sports writer for the StarNews. Gibson is a former NBA player and served as head basketball coach at UNCW. Hebbe was a coach at several New Hanover County schools. Moore played basketball under Coach Dean Smith at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame (GWSHOF) also recently honored a previous inductee. The group renamed its annual golf tournament the Joe Miller Greater Wilmington Hall of Fame Golf Tournament in recognition of  Miller, a 2010 hall of fame inductee who was a longtime successful high school coach. He died last year.

This year the tournament will be May 2.

Among his many achievements, Miller served as chairman of the tournament board for many years and helped drive its success. In his 38 years of coaching, teaching, mentoring and serving as both a N.C. High School Athletic Association president and athletic director, Miller was recognized by several athletic associations throughout the state.

“Joe Miller was an icon in the field of sports at the high school level and a personal friend whom I respected very much,” GWSHOF chairman Jon Rosborough said. “He loved being a board member of the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame and running our annual golf event. So it is with great pride that the Board of Directors honors him in the naming of their tournament: The Joe Miller Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame Golf Tournament.”
