Wilmington Sees Rise In Tech Job Postings

By Jenny Callison, posted May 25, 2018
In April, Wilmington was one of the best areas in the state with regard to growth in tech jobs postings, according to a monthly report issued this week by the NC TECH Association.

Most tech jobs posted were in the Triangle, but Wilmington was the Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) outside the tech-heavy Triangle with the greatest percentage increase, at 13.6 percent. The Charlotte MSA, for example, saw an increase of only about 2 percent, and several other MSAs – Fayetteville, Greensboro-High Point, Winston-Salem, Asheville, Burlington – saw tech job openings fall, some markedly so.

In Asheville, the decrease was over 21 percent; in both Winston-Salem and in Fayetteville, the postings dropped more than 13 percent.

April was the first month in 2018 in which the Wilmington MSA saw growth in the number of tech jobs advertised.

Despite its healthy uptick in postings, Wilmington still lags behind other MSAs in the state in the number of available tech jobs, which in April totaled 234. In the same month the Triangle had about 9,300 openings, Charlotte had just over 7,000, Fayetteville had nearly 900 and the Triad area (Winston-Salem, Greensboro and High Point) posted more than 1,000 jobs.

While the total number of tech job postings in North Carolina during April – 20,465 – was down nearly 150 postings from March, the number was 7.7 percent higher than the number of tech postings in April 2017, the report stated.

Durham-based NC TECH Association publishes its tech job postings report monthly, in partnership with recruiting firm Greene Resources.
