Boutiques Blooming At Mayfaire

With an influx of clothing boutiques, Mayfaire Town Centre has experienced steady retail growth over the past few months.

Fedora Boutique, which opened over the July 4 weekend, is housed in a 1,650-square-foot venue on Inspiration Drive. Located across the street from White House Black Market, the boutique is now the fifth Fedora store in North Carolina, and the first one to be located outside the Triangle area.

“Fedora has become a destination for many Wilmington residents whenever they traveled to the Triangle area,” said Kalpana Deedwania, owner of Fedora. “Our customers expressed their desire for a location closer to the coast that would be more accessible to them.”

Deedwania credits Wilmington’s rapid population growth as well as the city’s large population of college students as two of the company’s reasons for expanding here.

With the help of her daughter, Deedwania chooses each Fedora clothing item from trade shows, outlets and private showrooms across the country. The two try to include a mix of trendy and classic pieces in each season’s showcase at the women’s boutique.

Fedora’s Mayfaire location currently has five employees. As the boutique already has a well-established business model, much of the start-up process involved finding the ideal location, said Deedwania.

The Fedora company has been in operation for almost 10 years, and its sixth store opened last month at Greenville’s Arlington Village Shopping Center.

“With Mayfaire being the premiere shopping destination in the area, we knew it was the perfect home for Fedora,” Deedwania said. For more information on the boutique, visit www.fedoraboutique.com.

Debuting on September 14, Bevello Boutique is also situated on Inspiration Drive between Coldwater Creek and White House Black Market. The shop sells all types of women’s apparel from everyday wear, such as skirts and blouses, to formal cocktail attire, which range in price from $40 to $300. The shop also sells denim wear, shoes, accessories, handbags, undergarments and gifts.

“Although the economy has struggled, Bevello has flourished,” said Sarah Banks, store manager. “We have gone from four stores last August to 12 stores and an online boutique now. Our focus on providing amazing client service and carrying inventory with a range of price points and for a range of occasions has enabled us to continue our expansion.”

Banks praised the leadership of Bevello’s upper management team as another reason the boutique has been so successful.

Established in April 2009, Bevello has  nine stores throughout North Carolina and three shops in Virginia. The company’s Wilmington location has six employees.

Banks said the opening for Bevello went very smoothly. The store’s interior was repainted, and new lighting fixtures were installed before employees arranged all of the new merchandise.

The name “Bevello” is a mixture of the words “love” and “bella,” which means “beautiful” in Italian.

On a daily basis, Banks and other Bevello employees use Twitter and Facebook to reach clients by posting news about sales, new clothing arrivals, and other pertinent information. In the future, Banks plans to get all of Bevello’s clients on board with the social media outlets.

“I hope to continue to get our name out there in the Wilmington community and to become everyone’s ‘go-to’ place for retail shopping,” Banks said.

Inhabiting almost 5,000 square feet, Buckle is the third clothing boutique to open in Mayfaire Town Center this year. Situated across the street from Pottery Barn, Buckle opened in July.

Previously, Buckle operated at Independence Mall for 10 years.

“Much of the decision is based on where the company sees a location doing really well,” store manager Jordan Scott said of the Buckle’s choice to relocate.

Buckle specializes in denim wear and is known for its high fashion retail, Scott said. The boutique also sells items such as jackets, pants, shirts, accessories and socks. Buckle has more than 400 stores located throughout the country. For more information on Buckle, visit www.buckle.com.

All three clothing boutiques are open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sunday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
