The Greeks Authentic Mediterranean Deli has closed its location at the Beau Rivage Marketplace in Monkey Junction.

The closure comes in the wake of unsuccessful lease negotiations, according to Yanni Papanikolaou, who operates The Greeks with his parents and sister. Papanikolaou said the restaurant tried over the course of several months to renegotiate the terms of the lease to lower the rent but was unsuccessful.

“It came down to us either having to raise our prices or lower the quality of our ingredients in order to stay at that location, and we were not comfortable with either of those options,” Papanikolaou said.

Sales also dipped after Harris Teeter, located in the same shopping center, opened a hot food bar and pizza counter, he said.

Papanikolaou is expected to sign a new lease this week. He didn’t release the new location because the paperwork has not been finalized.

“I expect us to be open in two to three months,” Papanikolaou said. “Work continues on our Mayfaire-area location as well, so we’re anticipating two new stores this year. In addition to that, we’ve just extended the lease on our downtown location for another 20 years.”

The Greeks Authentic Mediterranean Deli’s downtown location is at 124 Princess St.
