Long tables full of fresh bread in the kitchen of north Wilmington’s new Hungry Heroes gives the impression that Willy’s Bakery still lingers at the 8024 Market St. spot, but Hungry Heroes is all sub sandwiches, salads and pizza.

Owner Pat Funigiello’s family spent 30 years in the deli business in Albany, N.Y., before bringing Hungry Heroes here, Funigiello said. The shop opened Monday where Willy’s used to be in the shopping strip that hosts La Costa Mexican restaurant near Porters Neck.

The Italian bread and rolls baked daily at Hungry Heroes are lightly salted and soft inside their just-crisp crusts. Get them rolled with broccoli, sausage or pepperoni.

Cold sandwiches featuring Boar’s Head meats include the Hungry Hero, a stack of roast beef, roast turkey and Swiss cheese. Funigiello describes the Citterio brand of Genoa salami he uses on a salami sub as “lean and the taste you will remember.”

Hot subs hold meatballs, sausage, steak, eggplant, pizza fixings or peppers and eggs.

Funigiello, a second-generation American whose family hails from Naples, Italy, also makes both thin-crusted Neapolitan-style and thicker-crusted Sicilian-style pizzas. Calzones are on the menu, too.

“The Sicilian pizza is not like anything you’ve tasted here before,” Funigiello said, describing the crust as “light and flaky.“

The shop is all take-out service for now. Pizza slices cost $1.35; a 16-inch, thin-crust, cheese pie costs $10.99; and subs and sandwiches range from $3.99 to $6.89. Hungry Heroes also sells pizza dough and cold cuts by the pound.
