For 324 Apartments Planned On S. College, Community Meeting Set

By Cece Nunn, posted Jan 18, 2019
A site plan accompanied a community meeting notice for the proposed Whiskey Branch apartments on South College Road.
A community meeting has been scheduled for a project that could add more than 300 apartments to New Hanover County, in the 5600 block of South College Road.

Part of the Cameron company-owned parcel at 5601 South College Road would need to be rezoned from R-15 to R-10, a residential designation that allows multifamily projects, for the development to be permitted.

The apartments would be adjacent to the gated Whiskey Branch subdivision off Navaho Trail and Mohican Trail, where amenities have been built, and dozens of homes and townhome-duplexes are under construction by Trusst Builder Group.

The project would be part of the Whiskey Branch brand but would have its own separate amenities, including a clubhouse and pool, developers have said. A site plan shows 13 buildings, one of them a 10,380-square-foot clubhouse.

The total site for the multifamily project is more than 60 acres, but the proposed rezoning request would apply to about 21 acres, according to a letter regarding the community meeting by attorney Matthew Nichols.

The letter stated that the meeting is scheduled for 6:30 to 8 p.m. Jan. 31 at the Midtown YMCA, 709 George Anderson Drive in Wilmington.

"The purpose of the community information meeting is to explain the proposal and answer questions from meeting attendees," Nichols wrote in the letter. "The meeting is also open to the general public."

Eventually, the Whiskey Branch development area is also expected to include a commercial center, with shops, boutiques and services within walking distance of the homes, according to the Whiskey Branch site map online.
