A new women’s clothing store has filled a vacant space in downtown Wilmington.

Owner Nancy Burns recently opened A La Mode Boutique at 108 Market St. and plans to celebrate with a grand opening event later this month.

Burns, who has worked in retail for 23 years and previously was general manager of The Pottery Barn at Mayfaire Town Center, said she chooses the clothing and accessories, including some home décor, in her store to appeal to both young professionals and urban trendsetters.

“I have something for everyone,” Burns said recently. “Even if you’re just looking for a statement piece or something to complete an outfit or a whole new look – it’s going to be a high-service environment but it’s also fun and comfortable.”

Some of the designers represented at A La Mode are new to Wilmington, said Burns, who is also stocking pieces from international labels such as Zadig and Voltaire of France, Shilla from Australia and the U.K.’s Marcus Lutfer.

Burns is leasing the 1,400 square feet of space on the first floor of the historic property from building owner Markus Schmid. According to New Hanover County property tax records, the building is more than 100 years old.

A grand opening event for A La Mode is scheduled for 6-9 p.m. Aug. 26.
