A Wilmington store that sells T-shirts, hats, shoes and accessories plans to open a fourth location at Mayfaire, the store's manager said Monday.
Top Toad, which carries brands like Guy Harvey, Lazy One, Salt Life, Ducks Unlimited, Simply Southern in addition to collegiate apparel, expects to open its Mayfaire location, in the former Coldwater Creek space at Mayfaire Town Center, in mid-March, said Mary Richardson, manager at Top Toad in Independence Mall. Richardson will also manage the Mayfaire store at 6849 Main Street.
In addition to the mall store, 3500 Oleander Drive, Top Toad has locations at the Cotton Exchange, 321 N. Front St., and at 10 N. Front St. in downtown Wilmington.
"That part of the county is growing and there is no store in the Mayfaire complex like Top Toad," said Richardson, when asked about the reason for the expansion to the center on Military Cutoff Road.
Owned by Diana Pellington, Top Toad has been in business for more than 25 years, Richardson said. Neither Richardson nor a representative of Mayfaire Town Center would disclose the terms of the Top Toad lease for the Main Street space in the center, which had recently been the
temporary home of costume and accessory shop Halloween & More and Go!, a store that sold calendars, games and toys during and a little after the holidays.
Richardson did say of the lease, "We would like it to be very advantageous for all involved."
She said Top Toad aims to work with local and state vendors whenever possible.
"We try support the businesses when they come in to show us their lines and if they’re local or a small business, we really look at them hard to be able to support them," Richardson said.
She said Top Toad has no plans to close its mall store, which has been at the mall for six years, or its downtown locations.
Coldwater Creek
closed its Wilmington store a couple years ago and Coldwater Creek stores across the U.S. because of the company's 2014 bankruptcy.
More new tenants are likely on the way to Mayfaire Town Center, with official announcements expected this year.
In December, site plans for the town center's Phase III of retail development, currently under review by city of Wilmington planning officials, described the proposed addition of about 90,000 square feet in seven new buildings on vacant land near the center's movie theater. Some spaces drawn on the plans were labeled at that time with the names general clothing store H&M; plus-size clothing store Lane Bryant; Hot Topic, which sells music- and pop culture-themed fashions and accessories; Torrid, which sells lingerie; furniture store West Elm; and West Marine, which offers boating accessories and parts, boating-related apparel and fishing supplies.
On the latest plans on the city's project tracking website, the Phase III buildings proposed for the center are not labeled. Officials with Mayfaire Town Center owner CBL & Associates Properties Inc. have not yet announced any lease signings for the new space, but had previously said construction could begin on the buildings in the first quarter of this year.
