Plans For Aldi Grocery Store Could Be Modified Before Leland Review

An Aldi grocery store planned for Leland will not be considered at the town’s Technical Review Committee meeting Tuesday after all, a town official said Monday.

Representatives for the discount grocery store chain asked for the plan to be removed from the TRC agenda, originally scheduled for the panel’s Tuesday afternoon meeting, to further study the discount chain’s proposed site plan, said Gary Vidmar, economic and community development director for the town of Leland, in an email.

“They indicated that they may want to modify the site plan before it gets reviewed by the TRC,” Vidmar said.

Aldi did not give any indication when the plan would likely be back on the agenda, he said. Vidmar said the TRC normally meets every month as long as there is a project on the agenda to review.

The proposed 19,000-square-foot store would be built on a 2.7-acre site at the corner of Ploof Road and U.S. 17, according to the previous site plans.

Without mentioning specifics, an Aldi official responded to questions about the Leland plan and potential Wilmington locations in an email last week.

“There are a variety of factors that go into selecting an ALDI location, including population density, proximity to competition, cost of the property and traffic patterns. We want to be conveniently based where Wilmington and Leland ALDI shoppers are located,” wrote Krysta Cearley, Aldi Salisbury division vice president. “While we don't have any specific details about these sites at this time, we will be sure to pass along information to you as soon as we have more details to share.”
