American Airlines Resumes Normal Schedule After Canceled ILM Flights

By Christina Haley O'Neal, posted Oct 12, 2018
American Airlines flights at the Wilmington International Airport returned to a normal schedule midday Friday following several cancelations at the airport because of Hurricane Michael.

Fifteen American inbound and outbound flights at the airport were canceled between Thursday and Friday morning, according to Gary Broughton, deputy airport director at the Wilmington International Airport (ILM).

United Airlines and Delta Airlines ran on a normal schedule during that same timeframe, Broughton said. There were "very few" delays at the airport, he added.

On Thursday, the day Hurricane Michael churned through the Southeast, hitting central North Carolina as a tropical storm, there were nine American flights canceled to four destinations: Laguardia, Charlotte, Philidelphia and Washington D.C.

Additional flights were canceled Friday morning, Broughton said. Those cancelations included two flights to Charlotte, two to Laguardia, one to Philadelphia and one to Washington D.C., he added.

American Airlines resumed a normal schedule about noon Friday, he said.

Although some strong winds and rain carried through much of Southeastern North Carolina from the storm, ILM did not suffer any further damage to the airport than what the facility had already experienced from Hurricane Florence, he said.

That storm, which hit the area Sept. 14, caused 153 flights to be canceled ILM among all three major carriers. Airport officials said Friday the results of its flight statistics, which run monthly, have not yet been calculated for all three airlines for the month of September. They did not have a timeline when those statistics might be released.

So far this year, the number of passengers traveling through ILM has trended upward each month in 2018, surpassing monthly totals in 2017.

The airport peaked so far for the year in the month of August at more than 47,200 departures with about the same number of arrivals, topping total arrivals and departures in August 2017 at more than 39,600 and 39,500, respectively.
