Cape Fear Community College announced this week four high-profile appointments in its administration.
Jim Morton, currently the finance director for Wilmington International Airport, has been selected as CFCC's new vice president of business and financial services. He replaces Kennon Briggs, who has served as interim vice president for business and institutional services since January, when the former vice president, Camellia Rice, retired.
"We are pleased to have Mr. Morton join CFCC's administration," board chairman Bill Turner said in a news release Thursday evening. "His many years of experience at ILM will certainly benefit Cape Fear Community College as we continue to grow."
Morton is expected to assume his new position at the end of October, college spokeswoman Sonya Johnson said Friday.
The board also announced in the release that Pat Hogan has been named executive director of Institutional Effectiveness and Planning. Hogan has been at the college for 17 years and most recently has been CFCC’s dean of vocational and technical programs.
"I'm excited to take on this new role at the college, and look forward to working with all departments as we renew our accreditation and plan for the future," Hogan said in the release.
Johnson said Hogan is already serving in his new capacity.
In a separate announcement Thursday, the college said that its current athletic director and its basketball coach have assumed new roles.
Athletic director Robert McGee has begun as CFCC's first dean of student affairs, and men's basketball coach Ryan Mantlo is now the college's athletic director, according to the news release.
“For the past 15 years, McGee has helped develop CFCC's athletic program, which has become a nationally recognized member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) with numerous regional championships and other accolades,” the release stated.
In his new role, McGee will be responsible for “interpreting, explaining and implementing policies and procedures related to student conduct and maintaining compliance with state and federal law,” the release continued, adding that McGee will also maintain and enforce the college’s code of conduct.
McGee attended East Carolina University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and a master’s degree in counseling psychology. McGee holds the distinction of National Board Certified Counselor and is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.
In succeeding McGee as athletic director, Mantlo will not only lead all of CFCC's athletic programs, but will also continue to serve as the head coach of CFCC's men's basketball team, the release stated. Now in his 10th year at CFCC, Mantlo says his goal will be to challenge and support CFCC's student players in the classroom and on the field.
Also, Johnson said that at Thursday evening's meeting of the trustees, CFCC president Amanda Lee presented highlights of the new state budget that affect the college. They include:
- Permission to use equipment funds for capital improvements necessary to accommodate equipment;
- A new policy that allows CFCC to receive year-round funding for all curriculum courses. In the past, the college has not received funding for summer curriculum classes;
- Approval of a one-time bonus for all state employees of $750 in December;
- Extra funds for additional compensation for employees. Lee will develop a plan for the board with recommendations regarding additional compensation.
