DANCE

The University of North Carolina Wilmington Office of Cultural Affairs presents Compagnie de Dance Jean-René Delsoin at Kenan Auditorium on Friday, Nov. 2. The public performance culminates the company’s residency at the university. A native of Haiti, Delsoin’s company reflects his roots with the vibrant music of drummers, colorful costumes and powerful dancers. The performance begins at 8 p.m., and tickets are $20 for the public. Info:www.uncw.edu/arts or 962-3500. 

On Friday-Saturday, Nov. 2-3, the DOI Dance Conference will be held at New Beginning Christian Church. The event for teen girls ages 12-18 will include dance and self-image workshops to inspire creative movements and discover what is unique in participants. The cost to participate is $25. FOOD

Food truck cook-off TRUCK-a-ROO will take place in downtown Wilmington. The competition gives guests the chance to taste the best of what the area’s food trucks have to offer and vote for their favorite. The event will also include local brews and wine available for purchase and live music. The cook-off begins 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3. Participants can buy ballot cards for $10, which includes samples from the trucks, but the event is free to attend. Info: www.truck-a-roo.com.

The Kiwanis Club of Wilmington will host its 42nd annual pancake day Saturday, Nov. 3 at Hoggard High School. The all-you-can eat event will feature pancakes and sausage 6:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and will benefit youth groups such as the Brigade Boys and Girls Club and the Terrific Kids Program, scholarship programs at UNCW and Cape Fear Community College and other programs in the area. FUNDRAISER

The 2012 Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk to Cure Diabetes will be Saturday, Nov. 3, at Mayfaire Town Center. The free event includes food, fun and games for participants. The walk begins at 9 a.m. Info: 509-9899. 

Help raise awareness and funds to fight suicide at the Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention Walk on Sunday, Nov. 4. Besides the 3-5 mile walk, there will be entertainment and information tables. The event begins 2 p.m. at Wrightsville Beach Park. Info: 297-6626.

CAR SHOW 

The British Car Club of the Cape Fear hosts Brits at the Plantation Car Show 2012. This event will showcase 24 classes of British cars, which will be judged for prizes. There will also be food, music and raffles. Admission is free. The show begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, at Poplar Grove Plantation. Info: www.bmccf.org. 

FESTIVAL

St. Stanislaus Church will host its Polish Festival on Saturday, Nov. 3, 11 a.m.- 5 p.m. The event includes Polish cuisine, dancing to the music of Polka Plus Band and children’s games. Admission is free. Info: www.ststanspolishfestival.org or 675-2336.  

See an array of high-flying objects on Wrightsville Beach at the 4th annual Cape Fear Kite Festival. The festival involves more than observing: there will be a children’s kite making class, stunt kite lessons and demonstrations and a kite auction. The event will be held on the beach by Shell Island Resort, 10 a.m.- 5 p.m., Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 3-4. Info: www.capefearkitefestival.com or 256-8696. 

POLITICS

Get ready for the election by attending Super Saturday: Politics American Style. The event will feature three perspectives on American politics. It will be held at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute on Saturday, Nov. 3, 8:30-noon. Admission is $15-$25 and includes a continental breakfast. Info: www.uncw.edu/olli or 962-3195. 

THEATER

Local playwright and director John Grudzien presents two new, original comedies, opening at the Cape Fear Playhouse on Nov. 2 and running during the weekends only through Nov. 11. Showing back-to-back are the one-hour comedy When I Last Saw Davy and the one-hour musical comedy Beef-The Musical. The show begins 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, with a matinee 4 p.m. on Sundays.
