Wilmington Hotel Completes Renovations

By Sherri Crawford, posted Nov 16, 2018
A Wilmington hotel has undergone an extensive renovation.

The Holiday Inn Express & Suites Wilmington-University Center was redesigned inside and out, over a six-month period.

Located at 160 Van Campen Blvd., the 130-room hotel was updated to reflect the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG)’s current design. Holiday Inn Express hotels are part of the IHG brand.

In addition to revamped guestrooms, the building’s lobby, front desk, porte-cochere and main entrance were modernized, officials said.

Other areas restored include the ballroom, meeting rooms, outdoor pool, fitness center and patio area.

The property was purchased in June 2017 by Meyer Jabara Hotels (MJH).

“This 22-year-old building is now modern, relevant and catering to an evolving generation of guests,” Eric Churchill, MJH’s senior vice president of operations, said in a statement.

“It’s been at least 12 years since the last physical refresh, and travelers are absolutely ‘wowed’ by all the enhancements. The redesign is attractive, fresh and inviting,” he added.

Guest bathrooms also received a facelift. Hotel officials said that each one was upfitted with a new vanity, backlit mirrors, tile floors and more.

Since purchasing the property, MJH officials said that the hotel’s TripAdvisor ranking has climbed 17 positions.

Other interior design updates include new carpeting in tones of blue and gray. An interactive media area was added, in addition to a grab-and-go style market.

Renovations began in March and were completed in August. Hotel officials said that Hurricane Florence, which made landfall in the Wilmington area in mid-September, did not harm the building.

Hotel officials declined to comment on the cost of the renovation. Meyer Jabara Hotels is headquartered in Danbury, Connecticut.

Boston’s ES Development & Management Corp. served as the project’s general contractor.
