Wilmington Health plans to move into a 20,000-square-foot medical office building in Leland set for construction this year, officials with the health care group said.

"We are expanding our services in Brunswick County and building a brand new state-of-the-art facility offering primary care, specialty care and diagnostic services," Alysa Bostick, marketing director for Wilmington Health, said in an email Friday.

The building's developer, Summit Healthcare Group, also developed Dosher Memorial Hospital's health care facility in the St. James Plantation area. Plans are to go vertical on the site in the next 30 days with an estimated completion of construction in September, said Joe Joseph, principal at Summit Healthcare Group.

Meanwhile, a voluntary annexation of 0.66 acres of land for the project was tabled from Thursday night's Leland Town Council meeting, town officials said. The additional acreage will be combined with an adjacent 1.4-acre parcel that is in the Magnolia Greens planned unit development, giving a "sufficient amount of space" for the project, said Gary Vidmar, economic and community development director for the town of Leland.

Vidmar said the item is scheduled again for council's Feb. 15 meeting. In December, Leland's town council approved an update to Magnolia Greens' master plan for the medical office building project.

Site plans show a single story building with 100 parking spaces. The property for the project is next to Walgreens in the Magnolia Greens area, according to town documents. The parking lot for the project will connect to the nearby shopping center and U.S. 17, Vidmar said, adding that site grading has started on the property.

The project “will continue to help the growing needs for medical practices” in the Leland community, Vidmar added.
