Town Of Leland Might Consider Incentives For Mixed-use Development

By Cece Nunn, posted Feb 9, 2016
The town of Leland might consider economic development incentives for a potential mixed-use project that would include 300 apartments and commercial space, a town official said Tuesday.

The project would be built on a 20-acre tract at Baldwin Drive and Village Road in Leland, currently occupied for the most part by the Leland Flea Market.

The unnamed developer of the mixed-use project, referred to in town documents as Harrington Village, has not yet submitted an incentives request to the town but has spoken with staff members about the possibilities, said Gary Vidmar, Leland’s economic and community development director.

“We’re having conversations with him about potential economic development incentives,” Vidmar said Tuesday.

It would be up to the Leland Town Council to make a decision on whether such a request moves forward after it is submitted, Vidmar said. In the past, Leland elected officials have indicated a willingness to consider economic development incentives on a case-by-case basis, he said.

A concept plan for the project shows about 30,000 square feet of retail/commercial space and 300 apartment units to be constructed in two phases.
