A former creosote plant in Navassa, declared a Superfund site five years ago, will soon get a plan for its restoration.
A group of federal and state government officials acting as trustees for the property will host a public meeting Tuesday at the Navassa Community Center to present an overview of the site and preliminary plans for its restoration and to gather public comments on the plan.
The 250-acre site has been a known hazard for years.
The wood treatment activities of Kerr McGee Chemical Corp. and other operators over the course from 1936 to 1974 resulted in the “release of contaminants associated with creosote into the soils, groundwater and marsh sediments at the site,” according to a news release from federal and state government agencies, now acting as trustees for the site.
Kerr McGee ceased operations in 1974, and in 2006 the land was transferred to Tronox Inc., another chemical company that went bankrupt in 2009.
After declaring the area a Superfund site, the government agencies ultimately succeeded in getting funds from Kerr McGee to restore the health of the site. A scoping document outlining the problems and proposed restoration process is available for public review.
The public is invited to attend the 6 p.m. meeting or to submit comments by mail before Sept. 4.
Progress on the project will be posted online here. The scoping document is available here.
