On First Filing Day, Eight Candidates For Local Posts Come Forward

By Jenny Callison, posted Jul 6, 2015
New Hanover Board of Elections officials reported a busy day as the county’s candidate filing period for the November 2015 elections opened Monday at 8 a.m.

As of 3 p.m., eight individuals had indicated their intention to run for office, according to a list posted on the board of elections website. Officials said Monday that the website list will be updated at least daily during the 11-day filing period.

First day filers included Dan Wilcox, running for mayor of Carolina Beach; Emilie Swearingen and Dean Lambeth, running for mayor of Kure Beach; Bill Saffo, running for mayor of Wilmington; and Bill Blair, running for mayor of Wrightsville Beach.

Wilcox, Lambeth, Saffo and Blair are incumbent mayors. Swearingen is currently serving on the Kure Beach Town Council; her term and that of council member David Heglar expire this year. As of 3 p.m. Monday, no one had filed to run for those town council seats.

On the Wilmington City Council, the seats of Neil Anderson, Margaret Haynes and Laura Padgett will be up for grabs in the November election. Padgett has said she will not seek re-election, but Haynes has announced her intention to run, and she filed on Monday, as did new candidate Paul Lawler. Anderson reportedly will seek his second term on the council, but as of 3 p.m.
Monday, he had not filed.

Terms of Carolina Beach Town Council members Sarah Friede and Steve Shuttleworth expire this year. Monday, Tom Bridges filed to run for one of those seats.

The terms of two Wrightsville Beach aldermen – Elizabeth Brown King and Darryl Mills – are up this year. As of Monday afternoon, no one had filed for those positions.

The New Hanover County filing period ends at noon July 17.
