MADE: Great Goods from Greater Wilmington

Produced by the Greater Wilmington Business Journal, MADE is a nomination-based competition seeking to spotlight makers, manufacturers, artisans, designers and small businesses in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties.

With roots in an economy originally built on tobacco, textiles, and furniture, North Carolina is no stranger to the making of things. While its industries may have broadened over the years, the focus on locally made goods continues to hold strong. MADE was created to spotlight some of the innovations occurring in design and manufacturing originating in the tri-county area. Winners are selected by a judging panel and will be profiled in a special MADE section of the Greater Wilmington Business Journal as well as featured at the annual WilmingtonBiz Expo on March 27, 2019, at the Wilmington Convention Center.

Wilmington’s Unicorn
In Silicon Valley and other technology hubs, “unicorns” are the rare species of privately held start-ups valued at more than $1 billion. Now Wilmington has its own unicorn — nCino, which spun out of Live Oak Bank in 2012, raised more than $150 million from investors and grew into a global business with nearly 600 employees. nCino CEO Pierre Naudé will talk during his Keynote Lunch interview at the 2019 WilmingtonBiz Conference & Expo about building a fast-growing technology firm in Wilmington, lessons learned along the way and the software company’s plans for the future.

Naudé has 30 years of financial technology experience, he is passionate about transforming the financial services industry through innovation, reputation and speed.  Under his leadership, nCino has become one of the fastest growing fintech companies in the world, and has been featured by top publications including The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Bloomberg, Entrepreneur and American Banker. Today, nCino helps over 200 financial institutions of all sizes around the world, including 11 of the top 30 U.S. banks, increase efficiency, grow profitability and improve the customer experience. Prior to nCino, Pierre held leadership positions at S1 Corporation, a software development company. Pierre also served in various global senior management roles at Unisys Corporation. He holds a bachelor's degree in finance and management from Upper Iowa University.

Elderhaus is Here to Help

Given the option, majority of seniors would rather age in place, choosing to receive care in their homes over assisted living and nursing facilities.

That is where Elderhaus PACE steps in. PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) services are provided by Elderhaus and covered by Medicare and Medicaid. Our overall goal is to manage all the health and medical needs of our elderly clients. Our work prevents premature hospitalizations and nursing facility placements, enabling our seniors to live in the community for as long as possible.

Advance Care Planning: A Workplace Wellness Program

Employers often implement programs to assist employees with maintaining a healthy balance between work and home life….but rarely do they include end of life support.  An unexpected emergency, advanced illness, accident or injury, or the death of a loved one can result in lost productivity for employees juggling workplace responsibilities with caregiving or household duties.  The process of advance care planning can help prepare and support employees (and their families) before the healthcare crisis occurs.

This presentation will provide information, resources, and positive encouragement for employers to include advance care planning as part of their employee benefits programs and wellness initiatives.
