WHQR Public Media won several awards at the Associated Press/Radio Television Digital News Association of the Carolinas award ceremony in Charlotte, according to a news release.

The Wilmington-based nonprofit public radio station earned five awards this year from Associated Press, stated the release.

Those awards are: first place in Public Affairs, for its coverage of Hurricane Florence;
first place in the Web/Multimedia category for its web special “Understanding 1898: America's Only Coup D'état" (produced by Annabelle Crowe, Katelyn Freund, Rachel Keith, Rachel Lewis Hilburn, Vince Winkel); and first place for Best Use Of Sound, on the fish industry post-Hurricane Florence (Winkel).

It took second place awards for Continuing Coverage of Hurricane Florence and Outstanding News Operation, according to the release.

“Congratulations to the WHQR news team for this well-earned recognition,” said interim station manager Doc Jarden, in the release. “Most impressive is the range and depth of the stories, part of our continuing commitment to news coverage in Wilmington and the Cape Fear Region.”
