Gary Smith
Dosher Memorial Hospital recently welcomed a new member to its Board of Trustees.

Southport Police Chief Gary Smith has joined the board and will fill the remaining two years of the six-year term held previously by former member Melissa Hinnant, who resigned in May for personal reasons, according to a release from Dosher Memorial Hospital.

The board nominated Smith to the post at its May 1 meeting.

His nomination as a new Dosher Trustee was approved by the Brunswick County Board of Commissioners at its mid-May meeting. According to the agenda, the term is set to expire Oct. 31, 2019.

A Southport native, Smith is a 20-year veteran of the Southport Police Department and was promoted to chief of police in 2015.
