NHRMC Adds Surgeon, Foundation Directors; Wins Heart Association Award

Mark D. Foster, M.D., has recently joined the medical staff of New Hanover Regional Medical Center, a news release from the organization stated. In addition to general orthopedic surgery, Foster will perform specialized spine surgery and foot and ankle surgery at the Wilmington hospital. He also has privileges at Brunswick Novant Medical Center and Dosher Memorial Hospital in Brunswick County.

Foster is a partner with Orthopaedic Specialists, with locations in Leland, Southport, Supply and Sunset Beach, the release stated.

Foster can provide consultative visits or referral care for patients with herniated lumbar discs, painful lumbar degenerative disc disease, chronic low back pain, osteoporotic compression fractures, lumbar spinal stenosis or spondylolisthesis, according to the release. Procedures included in his scope of practice include spine fusion, microdiscectomy, decompressive laminectomy, minimal incision surgery and kyphoplasty.

After graduating from Clemson University with a degree in mathematics, Foster earned his medical degree from the Medical University of S.C. in Charleston, the release stated, adding that after medical school, he remained at the Medical University for his orthopedic surgery residency. Immediately afterward, he spent a year completing his Foot and Ankle fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Subsequent to that he was a fellow in spine surgery at the N.C. Spine Center in Chapel Hill.

The New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation has announced the addition of four new members to its board of directors. New board members serve three terms of three years each, the news release stated.

Joining the board is Will Purvis, chief development officer at Liberty Healthcare and Kristen Beckmeyer, owner of Coastal Cupcakes and Topsee Tulip Frosting. Brad Southerland of Sean Dunn Insurance will also serve on the board, along with Patricia Dagnon, president of the NHRMC Auxiliary, who will serve as a liaison to that committee.

Five board members were reappointed for their second term on the foundation board, according to the release: James Bryan, G. Stephen Diab, Sandra Spiers, Fernando Moya, M.D. and Deirdre Shaw.

Continuing board members are John S. Pace, M.D., chairman of the NHRMC trustees; Phillip Brown, M.D., NHRMC chief of staff-elect and Jack Barto, NHRMC president and CEO, the release stated.  Officers of the Board for 2014-15 are John Allen, chairman; Bill Rudisill, vice chairman; James Bryan, treasurer; and Sandra Spiers, secretary.

In other news, New Hanover Regional Medical Center has received the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes the NHRMC Heart Center for its commitment and success in providing a high standard of care for heart attack patients, effectively improving the survival and care of these patients, the organization’s news release stated, adding that the Gold Plus Award is the highest possible award from American Heart Association for heart attack care.

For the first time, the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline program also recognized emergency transport agencies for their critical role in the identification and treatment of STEMI heart attacks. “STEMI” refers to ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction, the most severe type of heart attack, the release stated. NHRMC’s Emergency Medical Services and AirLink VitaLink Critical Care Transport teams were each among the first in the nation to receive the Mission: Lifeline EMS Silver Recognition Award, the highest award possible for transport agencies this year. NHRMC’s AirLink VitaLink Critical Care Transport program is one of only two flight programs in the nation to have received the award, according to the release.
