New Hanover Regional Medical Center recently added medical professionals to two of its practices in Leland and has received a grant to support its trauma prevention services.

Family medicine physician J. Wellington Adams joined the new NHRMC Physician Group–New Hanover Medical Group at its Brunswick Forest location in Leland, according to a recent news release from the health care organization.

Adams has been in practice since 1999 in the Wilmington and Myrtle Beach areas, most recently with Carolinas Coastal Health. He is board certified in family practice and also has extensive experience in emergency and urgent care, the release stated.

The new Leland office is located in the NHRMC Health & Diagnostics Building at the Villages at Brunswick Forest, in the space previously occupied by NHRMC Physician Group - Morgan Internal Medicine. NHMG will be joining several other clinical providers in the building, including NHRMC Health & Diagnostics and NHRMC Physician Group practices Glen Meade Center for Women's Health, Atlantic Urology and Hanover Gastroenterology.

New Hanover Medical Group offers services from pediatric through elder care, according to the release.

Hanover Gastroenterology, which occupies the same building as the New Hanover Medical Group in Leland, also announced a new member of its practice. Bernadette DeNicola (at left) is a physician assistant whose clinical training encompassed experience in internal medicine, dermatology, surgery, long-term care, psychiatry, primary care medicine, emergency medicine, pediatrics and obstetrics and gynecology, according to a news release.

DeNicola graduated from Mercy College in Bronx, New York, with a bachelor's degree in health sciences and a master's degree in physician assistant studies. Prior to completing her master's degree, DeNicola served as a phlebotomist at New Hanover Regional. She also volunteered her services while in New York City to provide primary care, health screenings and public health education to underserved populations in the area.

The trauma services grant, from Kohl’s Department Stores, will be used for injury prevention education and awareness, the medical center announced in a news release. The grant, which totals $27,154, is part of the Kohl’s Cares program, which partners with NHRMC Trauma Services to offer water, bike and helmet safety programs through schools, community health fairs and festivals, and special events at Kohl’s department stores.

Since 2006, Kohl's Cares has provided more than $230,000 in grant funding to support NHRMC’s child and adolescent injury prevention efforts, according to the release.

“We are excited to continue this partnership with Kohl’s to help keep the kids in our community safe,” Colleen Mistovich, injury prevention coordinator in New Hanover Regional’s trauma services department, said in the release. “Over the last eight years, we have given out thousands of bike helmets and life jackets, and spent countless hours talking with families about staying safe and preventing injuries. We are thankful that Kohl’s has been such a generous supporter of this mission.”
