Scotchman HQ Moves Down Eastwood, Plans For Growth

By Sasha Johnson, posted Jun 22, 2010

VPS Convenience Store Group, operator of the local Scotchman convenience stores, is moving its corporate headquarters in Wilmington from 10 S. Cardinal Drive to the larger Atrium building at 1410 Commonwealth Drive, on the corner of Eastwood Road and Military Cutoff.

The space on South Cardinal Drive is 13,000 square feet, compared to nearly 17,000 at the new building, according to Jeff Turpin, chairman and CEO of VPS Convenience Store Group. The move will be completed in July.

The corporate office space became tight, Turpin said since the company grew last year through a merger. With 65-70 employees involved in the move, he said he did not want to put a strain on commuters by moving too far across town.

Turpin worked with Jack Kilbourne of Maus Warwick and Matthews since January of 2009. Because the buyer is “doing a considerable amount of their own tenant upfit,” which requires extensive permitting, the property has not been officially been released until now, Kilbourne said.

“It was a sizable lease,” he said. Turpin required a space that would allow him to design the floor plan to fit the exact needs of workers while also staying within close range of the office at South Cardinal Drive, said Kilbourne.

VPS has plans to grow, but rather than expanding the company by increasing the number of stores in Wilmington, Turpin said “we are trying to improve the assets we have by remodeling the stores.” VPS operates 25 stores locally.

In addition to the Scotchman convenience stores and Village Pantry stores, VPS also operates Lil’ Cricket, Young’s and Next Door food stores. According to Kilbourne, the “Scotchman” logo will soon be outside the new building.
