Kathryn Colacchio, neonatologist and medical director for simulation for Coastal Children’s Services, recently received an award for her work with the Neonatal Education and Simulation Training program (NEST).

Colacchio and Deborah Stokes, lead educator/mobile simulation manager for Coastal Carolina Health Alliance, were recognized at the Elevate 2017 Conference, a national health care conference sponsored by Intalere.

NEST works to improve the health outcomes of high-risk newborns by further educating and expanding the medical knowledge of delivery room providers, according to a news release.

Colacchio was trained in simulation techniques during her Yale University fellowship. She travels with a team of experts to smaller community hospitals to teach team members how to resuscitate and stabilize premature babies.

“Simulation offers a high-fidelity, low-risk opportunity to practice skills in a safe environment, and allows staff the opportunity to ask an experienced neonatal team questions directly,” said Colacchio in the release.
