Jewelry Retailer Closes

By Jenny Callison, posted Jun 30, 2014
A downtown Wilmington boutique has apparently closed its doors.

Shoppers reported this past weekend that FIFI Jewelry & More, at 10 N. Front Street, was closed and workers were moving furnishings out of the space. FIFI specialized in inexpensive costume jewelry and accessories such as hats and handbags.

FIFI owner Fara O’Byrne could not be reached for comment by press time.

O’Byrne opened her first FIFI location at Independence Mall in the summer of 2010, moving her venture there from a DDT Furniture Outlet. The DDT outlet chain is owned by her parents.

In March of 2011 she added the Front Street location, saying at the time, “I love my mall store and I do really well, but it’s crazy to me the amount of people that say, ‘Oh you’re in the mall. I never go to the mall.’ I’ve always wanted to have (a store) downtown. This one is absolutely perfect.”

The downtown location is owned by Kermit Austin of Wilmington-based PowerCard. According to company sources, a replacement tenant has been identified for the retail space FIFI formerly occupied. No details were available as of press time.

The mall boutique closed in early January of this year, Independence Mall officials said.
