Learning Express Steams Into New Location

By Jamaal O'Neal, posted Mar 1, 2012

A long-time Wilmington retailer will soon be sharing retail space with Whole Foods.

Learning Express Toys — which specializes in a variety of toys and activities for a wide range of ages — will be moving its existing store in Hanover Center to Oleander Place by May, said owners Ed and Shelley Hobson.

Oleander Place, which was originally named Oleander Point upon its renovation, is currently being leased by Indianapolis-based Kite Realty.

The center’s anchor tenant is Whole Foods, which plans to open later this spring.

Learning Express Toys, which was first established in Wilmington in 1995, has operated its Hanover Center location for 5 ½ years, Shelley Hobson said.

Ed Hobson said the company’s biggest motivation to relocate its Oleander Drive location was the future exposure that Whole Foods’ customer traffic would give its store. The toy store would also grow from about 3,400 square feet to about 3,700 square feet at its new Oleander Place location.

“The opportunity to be associated with a shopping center with Whole Foods was important in our relocation,” Ed Hobson said. “[Whole Foods] is going to be a major draw for our metro area, and the exposure associated with the shopping center is going to help our business.”

Shelley Hobson agreed, adding that the additional signage along Oleander and Fordham Roads is another added bonus.

“We’ve enjoyed being at Hanover Center,” Shelley Hobson said. “We’re excited about our move, and feel this move will give us another fresh start.”
