Billy Quetel, chef and co-owner of San Juan Cafe, confirmed Tuesday that the Wilmington restaurant is closing.

Quetel would not, however, did not offer any further information, including when exactly the eatery will close its doors.

“We are closing, but that’s all I’m going to say at this time.” Quetel said in a phone interview Tuesday.

The restaurant at 3314 Wrightsville Ave. was opened in 2010 by chef Danny Keegan, a native of Puerto Rico. Quetel, who grew up on St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, joined him as co-owner in 2012.

Together they created a menu incorporating a wide range of Latin American flavors, with dishes from not only Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, but also South and Central America and the Caribbean.

The restaurant has received numerous regional accolades, including a two-time win for “Best Savory Dish” at the Wilmington Wine and Food Festival, and Trip Advisor’s “Best Latin Restaurant in Southeastern NC.”

Quetel said more information on the closure will be available in the coming weeks.
