Brothers Michael and Ben Powell celebrated the opening of Drift Coffee & Kitchen at Dungannon Village in Autumn Hall, off Eastwood Road, on Sept. 7.
No strangers to the business, the two have operated a cafe by the same name in Ocean Isle Beach for the past several years. When the opportunity to be a part of the Autumn Hall community became available, the brothers decided to bring their fresh approach to breakfast and lunch to Wilmington.
“We look forward to Autumn Hall residents and the entire Wilmington community helping to shape what we are,” Michael Powell said.
Chef Mikey Wiseman, who trained in Australia, has created a menu inspired by Australian culture as well as cities such as New York and Los Angeles. He makes all of his sauces, dressings and chutneys in-house, and sources food locally whenever possible.
In addition to serving premium coffees and teas, menu items include avocado toast, breakfast sandwiches and pastries, acai bowls, grain bowls, salads and sandwiches. Nearly everything is under $10, making it the kind of place people can afford to eat in on a daily basis, said Powell.
“We want to take the technique and care of a fine dining restaurant while imparting a more relaxed, rustic approach to our food,” Powell said.
The café, designed by Caroline Walkup of Caroline Walkup Interiors, is cozy and bright, with white walls, natural wood seating and large windows providing plenty of natural light. A community table crafted from 150-year-old pecan wood encourages guests to gather together to work or converse. Dungannon Village borders the Cross City Trail, so walkers and bikers will have easy access to the café.
Drift Coffee & Kitchen is located at 110 Dungannon Blvd. and is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
