Feast Down East, UNCW Sustainability and community partners present Food Day Wilmington 2016 on Oct. 24 at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

The event will take place 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in front of UNCW's Wagoner Hall. All activities are free and open to the public.

Food Day is a nationwide movement toward healthy, affordable, and sustainable food. Created by the non-profit Center for Science in the Public Interest, Food Day is celebrated each year on Oct. 24 and aims to bring communities closer to a healthy food system that is cultivated with care for the environment, animals, and the men and women who grow, harvest and serve it.

Activities to take place at UNCW include a Sustainable Food Fair showcasing community organizations and businesses with food-related missions and services. They will provide information about their activities and offerings, as well as how people can get involved.

The event’s featured guest, Plate of the Union, is “a collaborative campaign to raise the voice of Americans who care about food and farm issues during the current election season.”  The Plate of the Union food truck will bring organizers who, along with local student and community activists, will share information about how to advocate for policy change.

Candidates running for several local and state positions have also been invited to attend Food Day in an effort to foster a dialog of local food issues.

The Sustainable Food Fair will also include a food drive to benefit the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina and attendees are encouraged to bring a contribution.

Locally sourced lunch specials will be offered by UNCW Campus Dining at Wagoner Dining Hall and the UNCW food truck.
