The Sour Barn To Open This Month

By Vicky Janowski, posted Aug 17, 2016
Broomtail Craft Brewery is set to open its newest venture this month, according to owners.

A grand opening is scheduled Aug. 27 for The Sour Barn, 7211 Market St. The 3,000-square-foot space marks a larger facility for the owners of Broomtail, which opened as a nano-brewery at 6404 Amsterdam Way in 2014 – an early entrant to Wilmington’s craft brewery scene.

“We chose to expand in this direction to provide us with a better retail site ... a site where we can allow our sours to age without causing problems at the clean brewery, and we like to keep our businesses on the side of town where we live – Ogden,” said Barry Owings, who co-owns both with his wife, Lisa.

The Sour Barn will have 12 beers on tap, including Broomtail’s regular beers and one house light sour and a guest sour. Sour beers require a difference and longer process than the regular, or so-called “clean” beers. Both types will be brewed at Broomtail, and the sours shipped to The Sour Barn where they can age with bacteria and wild yeast that make up the process.

The Sour Barn can accommodate up to 78 people, said Lisa Owings, who added that there are no plans to close the Broomtail taproom.

The majority of The Sour Barn’s space will be in the front bar area, and it will feature a beer garden out back, Barry Owings said.

Details about the grand opening will be posted on The Sour Barn’s Facebook page.
