Following the sale of the Henrietta III
earlier this year, Cape Fear Riverboats has focused its efforts on expanding what started out as a simple snack bar into a riverfront bar and grill.
The River Grill, located on the barge that serves as a loading area for the company’s river cruises, will offer hot dogs, burgers and chicken sandwiches as well as French fries, onion rings and ice cream. Beer and wine are available, with a full bar to come.
Capt. Carl Marshburn, president of Cape Fear Riverboats, says the River Grill has one of the best views in Wilmington. His goal is to provide a family-friendly place for customers to relax and enjoy a cold drink or a bite to eat for a reasonable price.
“We will start out with a very simple menu as we get up and running,” Marshburn said. “With the idea that we can always add on if necessary.”
The River Grill is open to the public, not just those waiting to board a cruise, and cruise passengers can purchase food and drinks to take on board.
Cape Fear Riverboats operates a variety of daily river cruises on three former government vessels: the Capt. J.N Maffitt, the John Knox and the newly added Jacob’s Run.
“Many people in Wilmington don’t realize that just five miles upriver the river looks the same as it did in the 1800s. It’s a very quiet, relaxing, completely undeveloped place just outside the city,” Marshburn said.
