After four successful years on Bald Head Island, Sandpiper Coffee & Ice Cream has opened an additional location in downtown Wilmington.

Managing partners Ashlie and John Stegemann recently completed renovations at 10 S. Water St. and opened their doors Azalea Festival weekend.

The shop carries 20 flavors of ice cream made by Coastal Cupcakes as well as hot and cold brewed coffee made with beans from Java Estate Roastery.

Current ice cream flavors include the Battleship: vanilla ice cream with cookie dough, brownies and fudge, coffee oreo and bourbon caramel. There will also be several flavors of Italian ice throughout the summer.

While Sandpiper on BHI carries a full line of espresso drinks, the Wilmington location will serve only hot and cold brewed coffee for now, with plans for a full espresso bar down the road. Cold brewed coffee is offered black or tan, which includes milk, sugar and vanilla.

While seating is currently limited to outdoor benches, Ashlie Stegemann said there are plans to expand the interior eventally to include additional café seating.  Live music will take place on the patio each weekend beginning Memorial Day weekend.

Sandpiper Coffee & Ice Cream is currently open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Thursday and Sunday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. It is closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Hours will expand to 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily Memorial Day weekend.
