Who doesn’t love breakfast for dinner now and then?

For Surf House chef and owner Craig Love, developing a dinner series focusing on foods traditionally served for breakfast or brunch is a great way to shake things up during the off-season.

And pairing those dishes with bourbon cocktails just adds to the fun.

“Greg Ewan, our bar manager, had been doing this little gathering at his house where he and friends would get together and make these breakfast-inspired meals, play music and make cool bourbon cocktails,” Love said. “I approached him about making it a part of something we do at the restaurant that could have a very different mood or style than a typical dining experience. He loved the idea of it, and we have been kind of shaping it ever since.”

The first Bourbon + Breakfast dinner was held in January and included items such as a Southern fried oyster biscuit, porchetta with a sweet tea apple puree, fried onion and cured egg yolk, and a shrimp omelette with fennel, mushrooms, butternut squash, curry coconut cream, mustard chimichurri and lemon sabayon. Surf House, 604 N. Lake Park Blvd. in Carolina Beach, is now accepting reservations for the next event, which will take place Feb. 21.

Love said he hoped to continue the series, hosting one event per month throughout the off-season. He is also hopeful that is may morph into a platform for hosting guest chefs.

“We have wanted this to eventually be an outlet for other chefs who want an opportunity to show a tasting menu that may be different than what they do day to day in their own restaurants or to highlight something they are excited about coming up in their own kitchens,” Love said.

Bourbon + Breakfast tickets can be purchased online.
