Carolina Table Salt Shakes Things Up

Michael Woodard, owner of Carolina Table Salt, says he and wife, Geena, have put their restaurant equipment up for sale and are in negotiations for a takeover of the restaurant’s lease. A sale listing was posted to Craigslist Wilmington last month.

Michael Woodard cites a change in focus as the main reason behind the sale. While Carolina Table Salt has developed a devoted following for its homemade Southern-style dishes, the Woodards want to focus on promoting the company’s seasonings and developing new products.

Michael Woodard says that although this was a part of the overall goals for the company when it opened at 812 S. College Road in June, the addition of food service into the operation has hindered the expansion of the seasoning blends.

The Woodards relocated to Wilmington from Charlotte with plans to sell not only their seasoning blends but to operate a catering and carry-out kitchen. They began serving just one dish for lunch Tuesday through Thursday, but by August that had expanded to service Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with at least three items available each day.

“The biggest lesson learned here is that we were underfunded from the start for as much as we were trying to do,” Michael Woodard said. “And we’ve seen a lot of growth in terms of the seasonings, so it makes sense for us to focus our efforts on relaunching the business in that direction.”

Michael Woodard says Carolina Table Salt will concentrate on developing new seasoning blends and wholesale distribution once the restaurant is sold.
