Flying Pi Kitchen reopened its doors Monday with a fresh new look. Updated flooring and paint as well as a good dose of reorganization have things in sparkling order at 402 Chestnut St. in downtown Wilmington.

“After five years in business a place really needs a good cleanup,” said chef and owner Carolyn Atkinson.

Flying Pi specializes in small-batch, from-scratch cooking. Atkinson and her team serve up a variety of baked goods, sandwiches, salads and hot specialty dishes daily.

“Our savory hand pies are something we’ve really become known for,” Atkinson said. “That, and our butternut squash enchiladas. If I didn’t keep those on the menu I think my customers would kill me.”

Atkinson said the savory pie flavors change daily, and the enchiladas are served every Thursday. The specialty dishes, soups and baked goods also change daily and are posted on the restaurant’s Facebook page.

The reopening will kick off Flying Pi’s fall menu which will be heavy on chilis, stews and heartier meat dishes like braised pork and meatloaf. There will also be the sweet fall pies such as sweet potato, pumpkin and pecan.
