Bastille Day, an annual celebration commemorating the beginning of the French Revolution with the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, will be celebrated next week in Wilmington. At least three local eateries will feature signature French dishes and cocktails in honor of the celebration.

Caprice Bistro chef Thierry Moity has added several French specialties to his lineup for Bastille Day, including frog legs Marseillaise; salade Lyonaise; rabbit à la moutarde; coq au vin; macarons; a bleu, blanc et rouge sorbet trio with blueberries, white peaches and strawberries; and a crème brulée with goat cheese.

“This year we chose not to do a prix fixe menu but instead to add more French specialties à la carte, so that our customers do not feel obligated to take three courses,” Moity said. “They can mix and match between our regular menu and these specialties.”

For its 15th annual la fête de la Bastille celebration, Le Catalan French Café & Wine Bar will offer classic French delights such as Kir Royale, Pernod and Grand Marnier cocktails, escargot feuilleté and cheese and charcuterie plates.

“Calling all Franco-Americans: it’s time to put your French on,” said owner-manager Marie Penegre.

Flights of Southport will host a five-course meal and wine pairing on July 12. Host Patrick Robinson will take diners on a tour of France via wine and cuisine. Manager Liz Cervantes offered a few hints at what the menu will include:

“For a pre-event social drink we will be serving Kir Royale, a classic French cocktail,” Cervantes said. “The menu will include coquilles St. Jacques, foie gras, watercress salad, piperade, a duck breast dish and petits fours to wrap up the event. As for wines, a Hermitage and a Picpoul -- among others -- will be served and the dessert will be paired with a Chinon Rosé, but I don't want to give everything away just yet!”

Cervantes says that tickets are sold out for the 4:30 p.m. seating so only the 1:30 p.m. is available. Tickets must be purchased in advance and are on sale now for $46 per person. Call 363-1202 for details.

Caprice Bistro is located at 10 Market St.; Le Catalan French Café & Wine Bar is at 224 S. Water St.; and Flights is located at 1513-9 N. Howe St. in Southport.
