Two local businesses, Port City Java and Front Street Brewery, are celebrating 20 years in business this year. In honor of the milestone anniversary the two have partnered to create a special beer to be released Friday.

The collaboration came about as a result of a discussion of the upcoming anniversaries between Front Street Brewery's head brewer, Kelsey Cole -- a frequent customer at the neighboring Front Street Port City Java location -- and PCJ manager KC Hackney.

“To have two successful local businesses directly next door to one another come together to celebrate 20th anniversaries is very exciting,” said Front Street Brewery marketing director Ellie Craig. “Especially at a time when Wilmington is being recognized by many as on of the top places in the country to start a new business. It showcases what we are capable of as a community.”

The product is a Scottish Breakfast Ale which combines Front Street’s Dram Tree Scottish Ale with Port City Java’s freshly ground, single-origin Brazilian roast coffee.

“This unique roast has a medium body and a sweet, nutty flavor,” Cole said. “It’s a perfect complement to our rich, malty Dram Tree, along with Madagascar vanilla beans and cinnamon.”

Cole and Kevin Kozak, director of brewing operations, toured Port City Java’s roastery, tasting several roasts from around the world to select the right beans for the brew.

Front Street Brewery will release the limited-production Scottish Breakfast Ale on Friday at 11 a.m. Pints will sell for $4 and growlers will be available for $9.99 while supplies last.
