Is it a beer tasting or a science fair? Perhaps a bit of both. On April 26, Flytrap Brewery will host local scientists at Geeks-N-Taps, an event designed to help you find out if you can taste bitter compounds and detect various aromas found in beer.

Beer experts, along with scientists from the National Institutes of Health, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University, Wake Forest University and N.C. State University, will walk participants through activities focused on learning more about the science of beer.

Geeks-N-Taps was founded by Pat Phelps, an educator at the Smithsonian with a love of science and craft beer.

“We are so excited to be hosting Geeks-N-Taps for NC Beer Month,” said Flytrap brew master Mike Barlas. “I can’t wait to learn more about how my DNA and sense of taste impact my craft beer drinking experience. It’s sure to be an intellectually tasty time.”

Admission is $15 and includes five tastings. There are two scheduled times: 1-3 p.m. and 3-5 p.m. Admission for each is limited to minimize lines for activities.

La Bella Airosa Mexican Food Truck will be on site from 2 to 6 p.m.

Flytrap Brewery is located at 319 Walnut St.
