There are some major changes in the works for Raleigh-based restaurateur Thai Nguyen.

Following final inspections, Nguyen plans to open The Shack at Dockside this week in Carolina Beach. The restaurant, 300 N. Lake Park Blvd., was previously home to Seafest Seafood Buffet that opened in April and operated through September.

A departure from Nguyen’s typical Asian fare, The Shack at Dockside’s menu will offer everything from burgers and wraps and salads to steak and seafood dinners. There will also be an all-you-can-eat seafood buffet served with or without crab legs for $29.95 or $19.95, respectively.

Nguyen said the kitchen will be led by two chefs, one from Raleigh and another from New York. Renovations to the building include the installation of a large bar featuring 18 draft lines from which Nguyen plans to pour a variety of local beers. The nearly 7,000-square-foot building has a spacious outdoor patio that seats nearly 100, according to Nguyen.

The owner of more than ten restaurants in central and eastern North Carolina, Nguyen has meanwhile closed his most recent venture, Sushi XI, which opened in December in the Beau Rivage Marketplace on Carolina Beach Road. Nguyen said he is working with landlord Gerry Bigley to develop a new concept for the space and hopes to reopen prior to the summer season.

“We are removing the hibachi grills,” Nguyen said. “We did not have enough business with the hibachi service to be able to sustain our chefs.”

Nguyen said he hopes to incorporate homemade noodles and sushi into the new concept and that the restaurant will have a new name when it reopens.
