Sunny Sushi & Saki Lounge has spent the last several months perfecting its Thai menu and obtaining permits for a hibachi grill.

Looking to expand its offerings beyond sushi, the restaurant now serves a full range of authentic Thai specialties. In  the coming weeks a full hibachi menu will be available as well.

By definition, a hibachi is a traditional Japanese heating device. Hibachi-style cooking in the United States is often used as a term for Japanese teppanyaki cooking, in which gas-heated hotplates are used to cook items such as steak, chicken, seafood and vegetables mixed with rice and noodles. The grills are often integrated into tables around which customers can sit and eat while being entertained by the chef.

While traditional tableside hibachi service will not be available, the hibachi grill at Sunny Sushi will be visible from behind a glass partition that separates the kitchen from the upstairs dining room.

“There are about six or seven tables that will have a really great view of the hibachi grill,” server Joe Farr said.

Sunny Sushi opened at 114 N. Front St. in May of 2013. The business is owned by brothers Alex and Sonny Souvannarat.
