The Kitchen Appears Set For Change

Circa Restaurant Group is once again altering the concept at its corner store in The Forum shopping center on Military Cutoff Road.

The Kitchen, which debuted there at 2011’s end, was locked last week. A sign on the door reads “closed for remodeling.”

Circa owner and spokesman Ash Aziz could not be reached for comment, but he is known among area restaurateurs as an owner always willing to change a concept not fulfilling its potential or his idea.

The Kitchen replaced Grand Union Pub, which Aziz closed in summer 2011 after its bar business started to trump the food side. Aziz said he wanted food to be Grand Union’s focus.

Downtown, Aziz tried various ideas at 35 N. Front St. where he operated the Italian restaurant Prima, the French concept Bijou Brasserie and Sin Sin lounge before abandoning the space.

At Mayfaire Town Center in 2010, Aziz created his longtime dream 1950s-style diner, the vibrant red and white Happy Days, but a year later, he traded the concept for Towne Tap & Grill.

The six-unit Circa group is expanding, too.

Recently, Aziz announced plans to put an Osteria Cicchetti, the Italian spot he operates in The Forum, at the former O’Charley’s in Monkey Junction. Meantime, a 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday brunch has been added to downtown Circa 1922’s menu.

The group also owns Boca Bay and Brasserie du Soleil, both on Eastwood Road near Wrightsville Beach.
