The cook who served as a personal chef to Robert Downey Jr. while the actor was filming recently released “Iron Man 3” in Wilmington is opening his own restaurant near New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Jonathan Heller plans a grill and hot bar focused on Pacific Rim and California flavors at the former Manhattan Bagel, 2547 S. 17th St.
Heller, a longtime chef and food stylist for film and television projects, said the spot, yet to be named, will offer a hot bar similar to those at Chipotle’s. Bright, flavorful, from-scratch items, say sticky rice and spicy, crispy pork, may be ordered to stuff burritos or wraps or to mix into salads and rice or noodle bowls.
“It’s more of a fresh Cali theme to fast food,” Heller said.
Quick, convenient and healthy are themes, Heller noted. Expect gluten-free selections.
“A lot of restaurants in Wilmington – people have a hard time getting in and out of at lunch,” he said.
An exact opening date has not been set, but Heller said he would like to launch the 40-seat spot, plus outside chairs, this spring or summer.
The Washington, D.C., native who attended the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., also operates Reel Cuisine, which caters to film and television productions, Heller said. He has been working on productions, including food styling at Screen Gem Studios in Wilmington, for the past 12-15 years, Heller said. Lately, he’s served as personal chef to actors, too.
Family attracted Heller to Wilmington about 25 years ago, he said.
