A general contractor with offices in Wilmington and Charleston, South Carolina, was chosen to manage and build a more than $9 million project on Bald Head Island.

Thomas Construction Group is building a new aquatic facility, a new casual dining facility called the Ocean View Restaurant, two tennis courts and additional parking at the Bald Head Island Club, a vacation, event and golf destination on one of the state's southernmost barrier islands, only accessible by boat.

"The Bald Head Island Club is pleased to partner with Thomas to bring a much-needed amenity to our facility," said Robert Norton, general manager of the Bald Head Island Club, in a news release from Thomas Construction. "Our new Ocean View Restaurant and pool complex will provide our members and guests with a best-in-class recreation area to further enhance their experience. Thomas has a long history of this type of project and was the clear choice to complete our team."

The aquatic facility will include new pools and decks, the release stated, with spaces for activities such as lap swimming, aerobics and swim lessons. The new restaurant will seat 200 people and serve island and locally inspired food, handcrafted drinks and a variety of seasonal, health-conscious dishes, according to the release.

The changes will provide a phased opening so members can use facilities upon completion, the release stated. A number of clubs in the Cape Fear region like Bald Head Island's have been undergoing changes and renovations in recent years, including the Country Club of Landfall.

Among other local Thomas Construction Group projects in the works are the TowneBank Building off Military Cutoff Road and facilities for Wilmington Treatment Center.
