A Cotton Exchange store that opened in October will nearly double in size when it moves to North Front Street in March.

Modern Legend opened in the Nutt Street side of The Cotton Exchange in downtown Wilmington in October, with an inventory that includes vinyl records, minimal and modern home décor, women’s beauty products, men’s grooming items, jewelry and accessories.

In a short time, the store gained a following, prompting owner Catherine Hawksworth to seek more space.

“Business has been better than I anticipated,” Hawksworth said Tuesday.

The storefront formerly occupied by comic book store Nerdvana at 130 N. Front St. appealed to Hawksworth visually, with big windows facing the heavily traveled corridor.

“It’s hard to get that visual outside perspective, so I think it will be really good to be right on Front Street,” she said.

Hawksworth said she plans to double the number of vinyl records in her inventory.

"Since like 2013, 2012, vinyl records have been a really huge thing, especially in the younger generation, and they're just booming more and more as time goes on," said Hawksworth, 24.

The more than 1,400 square feet of space Hawksworth recently leased at 130 N. Front St. for an undisclosed amount is nearly double the size of Modern Legend’s current digs. The new location is part of Front Street Centre, a retail and office complex that includes a Chops Deli, and like The Cotton Exchange, is also owned by the Bullock family.

Hawksworth, who spent her childhood in Wilmington and recently moved back to the Port City from Seattle, said she plans to hold a grand opening celebration on March 11 at 130 N. Front St., with a sale and live, acoustic music. The Nutt Street store in the Cotton Exchange will remain open until March 10, she said.
