New Microbrewery, Tap Room Proposed On Randall Parkway

By Cece Nunn, posted Oct 27, 2016
Vacant land on Randall Parkway in Wilmington could one day be home to a new microbrewery and tap room, potentially adding another player to a growing local industry.

Free Parking LLC, the owner of the 1.65 acres at 3130 Randall Parkway, is seeking a conditional district rezoning from the city that would allow a more than 15,000-square-foot facility, including a 9,100-square-foot brewery and 216-seat tap room.

A concept plan calls the project “Flying Machine Brewery.” The potential developer, Prestwick Investments LLC, has the land under contract.

The property “was left split-zoned after a property trade to facilitate the Cross-City Trail. Microbreweries are not permitted in an Office & Institutional (O&I-1) district, but are allowed in the Community Business (CB) district. Use of the consitional district rezoning process will assure appropriate features & improvements,” says the application for the zoning change, prepared by Cindee Wolf of Design Solutions on behalf of Free Parking LLC.

The craft beer industry continues to boom in Wilmington and the state, with some industry watchers predicting that the city could be home to at least 15 breweries by next year, according to a Greater Wilmington Business Journal article in September.

The Flying Machine Brewery proposal is on the agenda for the city Planning Commission meeting that starts 6 p.m. Wednesday in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, 102 N. Third St.
