An athletic apparel and accessory store at Mayfaire Town Center is dropping out of the race for dollars in the Wilmington area.

Signs at TrySports, 925 Town Center Drive, on Tuesday advertised a store-closing sale.

“Basically, there’s not enough volume in the market,” said David Bolger, general manager of the TrySports stores in Wilmington, Charlotte and Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

While he was unable to provide the exact date the Wilmington location would be closing because of what he described as ongoing discussions with the landlord, Bolger said the other TrySports stores in Charlotte and South Carolina will remain open.

He said the arrival of the Port City’s newest Dick’s Sporting Goods at Mayfaire Community Center last summer did not help improve the sales situation at TrySports.

The Mayfaire TrySports, situated across Town Center Drive from Mayfaire 16 Cinema, opened in its 3,800-square-foot space in November 2008.

"We expect them to be out of the space by the end of the month, said Sue Rice, general manager of Mayfaire Town Center," in an email Tuesday. "One of our top priorities is to create and maintain an enjoyable shopping experience for our customers. Our leasing team is hard at work pursuing opportunities to fill the space as soon as possible."

Sale prices at TrySports on Tuesday were 30 to 70 percent off, TrySports signs said.

In June, the developers of Mayfaire Town and Mayfaire Community centers sold the centers to CBL & Associates Properties for $192 million. CBL brought in new leasing agents.
