The local franchise of a business that pairs wine and art is opening a second location to be closer to its customer base in Brunswick County, the owner said Thursday.
Wine and Design, which hosts painting parties and classes currently in a space at Landfall Center in Wilmington, is opening another art studio in Leland’s Waterford Business Center.
Owner Claudia Wooten-Outlaw said her Brunswick County customers are very supportive, traveling from the southern Brunswick beach towns to Wilmington to participate in Wine and Design events.
With the new Leland location, “I’m trying to offer the Brunswick County people some fun entertainment at night where they don’t have to come all the way to Wilmington,” she said. Wooten-Outlaw added that the Leland studio will also host daytime events.
Currently, 10 artists work for Wine and Design, and Wooten Outlaw said she’ll be adding more artists as the business expands and likely more staff.
The new Wine and Design location will be in Suite 107 at 503 Olde Waterford Way in nearly 1,300 square feet of space.
The current tenant in that suite, Brunswick Surf & Skate, plans to move into a retail building across U.S. 17 from the Waterford center, said Don Harley of Harley & Associates, who represented the landlord in Wine and Design’s lease of the space.
Wine and Design has expanded in another way this year by offering a mobile version of the business called Design on Wheels. Wooten-Outlaw’s daughter, Kathleen Dunnigan, came on board as business manager and has driven the growth of the Design on Wheels portion of Wine and Design, Wooten-Outlaw said.
The demand for art classes accompanied by wine as an entertainment option seems to be growing. The Wilmington franchise of Painting with a Twist, a separate wine-and-art business, celebrated its grand opening this month at 5732 Oleander Drive. Founded in Louisiana, the company has more than 170 franchises in the U.S., according to its website.
With corporate headquarters in Raleigh, Wine and Design has franchises in at least 10 states.
Discussing the rise in popularity of what are known as sip-and-paint businesses, Wooten-Outlaw said, “I think our area really appreciates and supports the arts, and I think it’s a fun night out.”
The Leland location of Wine and Design will celebrate its grand opening from 4 to 6 p.m. Dec. 3.
